At the end of his ministry on Earth, Christ prayed for the unity of his disciples (John 15-17). This was among the highest of his priorities. The Church is the first truly global institution, begun by Jesus himself.
John 13:32: "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if you have love to one another." As Francis Schaeffer has noted, this verse implies that the world has a right to question whether people are really Christ's disciples, based on their treatment of each other.
The fragmentation of the church is thus a scandal to Christ, as well as a source of confusion to the world.
Pluralism that would embrace practically any doctrine is the antidote offered by some denominations. This, however, is not the basis for Christian unity. It only tends toward more confusion. See the rest of this dilogic for a better alternative.
