Prayer Patterns

This is a set of notes on prayer based on my study of the Scriptures.  You may find these helpful in your own studies or for sharing with groups. 

 

2 Samuel 7:21 - We must pray if we want our spiritual life to grow.

 

Nehemiah 1:6 - Confess sins of self and others.

 

Psalm 5: 2 - We cannot demand from God.

 

Psalm 55:17 - We can pray at any time.

 

There are four Types of Prayer:

Adoration. Confession. Thanksgiving.  Supplication.

 

1. Adoration:

 

Praise Him for Who He is –

   Almighty

Holy

Living

Loving

Glorious

True

Self-existing

Unchanging

Good

Eternal

Wise

Gracious

All-powerful

All-present

Compassionate

Majesty

Inscrutable

Just

Perfect

Immutable

Sovereign

Provider

Forgiver

Protector

Sustainer

Reconciler

Designer

Comforter

Liberator

Enlightener

Governor

Embodiment of grace, mercy, and comfort

Father of Jesus Christ and all people

Fountain of life and immortality

Treasure of everlasting goods

Judge

 

2. Confession

Confess even small sins to God –

            ­I have failed in Your plan for me

I have disobeyed your commandments

I have brought shame to You

I have neglected You

I have given priority to worldliness

I have transgressed You

I have walked perversely before You

RELATIONSHIPS

 

3. Thanksgiving:

What do we thank God for?

            Life — air to breathe; health

Food

Salvation / mentor

Peace. Joy.

Fitness Alertness

Provision Protection

            Forgiveness      Spiritual atmosphere

            Relationships

 

What you are now:

Son or Daughter of God

Servant of God

Soul-winner

Scripture expositor

Giver to God’s work

Disciple of Christ

Seeker to walk in righteousness

4. Supplication:           

Philippians 4:6-7:  The godly person should not worry about anything – it is for God to worry about us.

    What is supplication?

To put aside every weight sin

To be pure in spirit

To hunger and thirst for righteousness

To be pure in heart

To be a peacemaker

To be prepared for persecution or righteousness

To cleave to good

To shun the wicked

To bring the body into subjection

To bring myself into prayer

To show kindness

To walk in righteousness

To guard my heart against evil

To show the love of Christ

To flee from all sin and shame

To make sacrifices to achieve goals according to God’s will.

 

Remove far from me --

All iniquity and profaneness, superstition, and hypocrisy

Worship of idols in heart and of individuals

Rash oaths and curses

Neglect and indecency of worship

Passion and Corruption

Lying and injuriousness

Every notion, impure thought, base desire.

Every unseemly thought.

 

               Lord grant me --

To be religious and pious

To worship and serve

To bless and swear truly

To confess

Affection and obedience

Patience and good—temper

Purity and soberness

Contentedness and goodness

Truth and incorruptness

Good thoughts

Perseverance to the end

Cleanse me from secret faults

 Be merciful to my sin

Magnify God’s mercies upon me

I turn to God to seek Your face

Shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death.

 

Guide my way into the way of peace.

Openness, straightforwardness, goodness, truthfulness faithfully study God’s Word.

Discipline, forgiving spirit, moral purity, social sensitivity, self-denial, quiet time, fellowship.

Hospitality, servant attitude, accountability, witnessing.

 

Pray for:

THE NATION -- Government

Other faiths

Missions and their projects

Churches life and work

Preachers and their ministry

Leaders and their decisions

 

Draw the nations to God

Let the nations know God

May the governments see that the leaders will:

Seek encouragement from God (Romans 15:4)

Honor God with speech and deeds (Proverbs 3:6)

Learn righteousness and follow (Isaiah 26:9)

Be obedient to God’s commandments (Matthew 28:20)

Have teachable spirits (Psalm 2:10-11)

Be taught the good and right way (2 Samuel 23:3, 1 Samuel 12 23)

Be full of spirit and wisdom (Acts 6:3)

Endeavor to restore families (Psalm 127, Ephesians 5:22-23)

Be courageous and be responsible to confront threats to the moral fabric

of nations (Isaiah 35:4, Romans 1:13,14)

Have compassionate hearts for the poor and be charitable (Proverbs 29:14)

Be kept from evil (John 17:15)

Be faithful (Psalm 101:6)

Be people of prayer (Luke 22:46)

Humble themselves and lead people forth in the healing of nations (2 Chronicles 7:14)

 

Mass media — radio, TV, films newspapers

Health and community services

Scientific research

Educational system

That God would be the source of inspiration and creativity and God will be glorified as a result (John 8:32 Ephesians 5:8-13)

That righteous men and women will be promoted to managerial status in all areas of the media (Proverbs 10:19)

That truth will prevail and strongholds of confusion, deception, and manipulation will be exposed (Philippians 4:8-9)

That men and women will resist every evil practice (Deuteronomy 30:15-19)

That God’s overruling in every area of experimentation (Isaiah 40:26,28)

That honorable and God-fearing scientists will be lifted up (Isaiah 42:5)

That teachers will be exemplary role models in speech and conduct who will encourage. inspire their pupils to achieve good learning skills coupled with wisdom and common-sense. (Proverbs 3:1-2)

God desires your fellowship.

We are changed by beholding Christ (I Corinthians 3 1 18

We are refreshed

Prayer — Word of God

Practice of His presence

Practice holy living (Hebrews 12:14, Isaiah 59 1,12, Psalm 101:6)

 

Answers to prayer —

1. Cleansing the life (I John 1:9)

2. Walk in obedience (1 John 3:22)

3.    Claiming God’s promises (Matthew 21:22)

4. Delighting in the Lord (Psalm 37:3-4)

                    5.  Concentrated, persistent prayer (Luke 11:8-9)
                    6.  Waiting in faith (Psalm 62:5)
