The front of the sanctuary presents only the clean vertical lines of architect Harold Wagoner's
design, which reflects both the austere nature of Reformed theology and the modern
style of mid-20th century architecture. But behind the columns and dark screens the
thousands of pipes of the Hopkins Memorial Organ are arranged in six Divisions.
This diagram illustrates the arrangement of the six Divisions as seen from the front.
The Great Division is located front and center. The Swell, Choir and Solo Divisions are enclosed in boxes with shutters to allow control
of their volume with expression pedals. The Positiv is located in the center, above the
Great, as is traditional. The large Pedal Division is placed in the rear behind the Great and
the Swell. Behind all of the pipes is a sloping wall that serves to reflect the sound
into the sanctuary. The sanctuary itself, with its high, nearly bare walls, serves to
provides ample reverberation and hence is considered to be a part of the instrument.
We have photos of the pipes in every Division. Now....
