Transcendence and Immanence | |
---|---|
A: God is transcendent. The Creator is absolutely
distinct from the creature, with no conversion, composition,
or confusion. |
B: God is immanent. God is present and active in
all created space and time, working out His providence in
it. |
-B: Exaggeration of transcendence leads to a view
of God as "wholly other" and the universe as autonomous from
God, running by itself. Dualism, deism. |
-A: Exaggeration of immanence leads to a view of
the universe as merely an extension of God, or an emanation
from God; pantheism or, more properly, "pan-everything-ism". |
